It's one of the first towns set in Chile by the Spanish conquerors. It's centre has a colonial style, with many churches and some old buildings. There is also a small street commemorating Ignacy Domeyko, a Polish engineer who contributed a lot in the early years of Chilean independence, in building up knowledge, and mining industry. I'm getting ready to start tomorrow cycling the desert and the next pass through the Andes... I guess it can be the last chance to enjoy a bed for some time :)
